The Warehouse, Singapore

The Warehouse, Singapore

The Warehouse offers a wonderful boutique experience in Singapore, with interiors that feature louvre windows, high ceilings, custom-made lights, contemporary furnishings and modern artwork.

Located on the banks of the Singapore River, the hotel occupies a historic 1895 godown, which is now a restored heritage space with a sleek, 37-room design. Many of the original architectural elements of the warehouse have been preserved, and the triple-pitched roof enhances the structure, making each room unique. The rooms are historically-detailed with tailor-made, single-unit copper wall pieces that integrate everything, from desk to wardrobe. The interiors are spacious and loft-styled with peaked ceilings and historical industrial beams. While many rooms have gorgeous views of the Singapore River, the River View Mezzanine has two tiers with a special reading room on one level.

For wonderful, home-cooked specialities, the hotel’s signature restaurant, Po, offers guests a thoughtful glimpse into local cuisine. Crafted by Willin Low, founder of Wild Rocket, which is one of Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants, the eatery pays homage to popo, which means ‘grandmother’ in Mandarin, celebrating classic local dishes.

Riveting/ fascinating facts about the area:

  • The Warehouse was originally built in 1895 as part of the Straits of Malacca trade route. At the time, the area thrived in liquor distilleries and illegal underground activity. In 1911, the site became an operating ground for Chinese and Fujianese secret societies.
  • Havelock Road was known in Hokkien as Chiu Long Lo, meaning “Spirits Shed Street.” From coconut sap, palm, rice and fruits, homemade toddy, arrack, and tuak were being distilled in corners and alleyways of the street.
