[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Riveting/ fascinating facts about the area:
  • Bhutanese call their home ‘Druk Yul’ which means ‘the Land of the Thunder Dragons’ because of the extremely powerful storms which constantly roar in from the Himalayas
  • Thimpu is the only capital in the world without traffic lights. In fact when traffic lights were installed the people objected and the city reverted back to the use of white-gloved traffic police
  • The first foreign tourists were allowed into Bhutan in 1974
  • Bhutan is the world’s only carbon sink, that is, it absorbs more CO2 than it gives out

Interesting people:

When Sonam Choki was born in 1982 in Bhutan, she was born with a disability. One of her hands was missing from just below the elbow down. But that didn’t stop her from pursuing her passion for music. Her father in particular encouraged her to listen to his art rock record collection, and she particularly grew fond of listening to Black Sabbath and Motley Crue. When Sonam was just five years old, she told her parents that she wanted to be a pianist when she grew up. Years later, she became the world’s first one-handed pianist to play in the Boston Symphony Orchestra.

[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Exciting reasons to get out of bed:
  • Visit Thimphu Chorten (Memorial Chorten)
  • Visit the Clock Tower Square
  • Experience the vibrant Thimpu market
  • Visit Changangkha Lhakhang (where the locals go to seek the Buddha’s blessings)
  • Plan a trip to the National Library and Archives of Bhutan
Shopping and Restaurants: Eat: Traditional Bhutanese food has been influenced by its neighbors, especially China, Tibet, and India. But like the country itself, the local cuisine has been able to maintain its unique character. It’s less oily than Chinese or Indian food and spicier than most Tibetan dishes.

Shop: Lots of craft stalls line the middle of Norzin Lam opposite the Taj Tashi hotel. It's the single best place to shop for crafts, with stalls selling everything from embroidered boots to handmade paper. There’s more. Across the Kundeyling Baazam cantilever footbridge from the Weekend Market, on the west bank, is this handicraft market, selling everything from wooden bowls and mala beads to printing blocks, amulets and yak tails.
