Hanoi, which means ‘City of rivers’, has a venerable history in traditional cuisines with many surprising delicacies. The culinary scene sees an amalgamation of French, Chinese and Thai influences, with the famous snail noodle soup being a favourite that can be found everywhere.
Hanoi is a fantastic arts hub with a host of jazz clubs, and more interestingly, a water puppetry scene. The traditional art of water puppetry dates back to the 11th century, when it originated in the Red River Delta in Northern Vietnam, where musical puppet shows were used to tell stories on the rice paddies.

Interesting people:

Meet the artist, Dinh Q. Lê, who has exhibited fine works of art at Whitechapel Gallery, London; MoMa, New York; the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston; and dOCUMENTA(13) in Kassel. Born in Ha Tien, he escaped Vietnam at a very young age with his family, and migrated to the United States of America. His works, which include multimedia installations and photo-weavings, draw from personal history rooted in the evolution of Vietnam’s war, with significant political references. Today, he lives in Ho Chi Minh City, where he has – among other things – co-founded Sàn Art, a contemporary, non-profit art space.
