Tucked away on a leafy street two blocks from the beach in Playa del Carmen, Hotel La Semilla is a find like no other. Picture a lovely garden filled with hammocks, friendly staff and an ocean-view rooftop terrace that’s great for enjoying a cocktail or a glass of wine with your special someone.

Behind La Semilla’s story is a love story. The owners met many years ago while working in hospitality in New York City and it was love at first sight. From the beginning of their relationship, they dreamed of owning a hotel one day, a little property near the water. Then, in 2013, their dreams came to fruition.

This hotel is a magical place filled with the love and care the owners put into running it. It is not uncommon to find the owner chatting with guests during breakfast, engaging in lively discussions about local culture or helping plan itineraries. It’s this same love and attention to detail that has made the property a refuge for stylish travelers looking for a personal and romantic jumping-off-point for relaxing and exploring the Yucatan Peninsula.

The Spanish word semilla means seed. This word has been a powerful north star in guiding the vision and values of the brand. A seed is something that you nurture and love – it blossoms right before your eyes into something extraordinary yet unbelievably simple. The owners of this property believe in simple beauty and simple pleasures, respect for all living creatures and the quiet brilliance of nature. All of which encourages their guests to slow down and reconnect with the earth, each other and themselves.

They receive gifts on January 6, the day on which Mexicans celebrate the arrival of the Three Wise Men
  • Playa del Carmen, especially Fifth Avenue is a people-watcher’s paradise. And it has some amazing street art. The wide concrete and stucco walls of Playa del Carmen are perfect canvases for street art. Some are colorful and quirky, while the others are fierce and powerful

Interesting people:

Meet Yosimar Reyes, a two-spirit poet from Guerrero, Mexico, who now lives in San Jose, California. His poetry has been featured in the collection Mariposas: A Modern Anthology of Queer Latino Poetry, and he has published a chapbook of poetry called For Colored Boys Who Speak Softly. His style has been described as “a brave and vulnerable voice that shines light on the issues affecting queer immigrant youth and the many disenfranchised communities in the U.S and throughout the world.” [/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row]
