  • Bodrum was previously known as Halicarnassus, with its roots in Ancient Greek. The name later became Bodrum, derived from ‘Petronium’, the Hospitaller Castle of St. Peter.
  • Until the 20th century, Bodrum was a peaceful town of fishermen and sponge divers, along with a community of bilingual Cretan Turks. The intellectual community emerged after the 1950s, when the exiled writer Cevat Şakir Kabaağaçlı became enamoured by the quiet region and moved here.
  • In 1402, Crusader Knights arrived in Bodrum, and used the remains of the town’s Mausoleum to build the famous Bodrum Castle, also known as the Castle of Saint Peter.
