[vc_row][vc_column][vc_column_text] Riveting/Fascinating facts about the area:
  • ‘Thira’ is Santorini's official name. Before it became Santorini, the island was called Kallístē, which means ‘most beautiful one’.
  • Santorini sits in a massive volcano, that is believed to have ended Crete’s Minoan civilization. Because of its volcanic history, the island is surrounded by red, white and black beaches.
  • Fira is the capital of Santorini, and is one of the biggest tourist destinations in the region. Not only do most cruise ships dock at Fira, but almost all ferries arrive and depart from the city.
  • At one time, the Venetians built over 500 castles in Santorini, so as to protect the region from pirates!

Interesting people:

Meet Mariza Koch, a Greek musician well known for her folk music albums in the 1970s. At the Eurovision Song Contest in 1976, she represented Greece with her song ‘Panayia Mou, Panayia Mou’, which is one of her best till date. Koch grew up in Santorini, and produced a range of traditional folk songs, blended with accents of modern electronic instrumental influences, with a folk rock vibe. In 2010, Alpha TV gave Koch the 29th rank in the Top Female Artist category since 1960, and the ageing musician continues to be a legend in the artistsic circles of Santorini.
